The step from GCSE to A-level maths is the steepest in the school curriculum. Students who collected an 8 or 9 without much effort meet, often for the first time, material that does not make sense on first reading. How they respond in the first term of Year 12 tends to set the course for the two years.

How the A-level is examined
A-level maths is linear: everything is examined at the end of Year 13, across papers covering pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics. The boards arrange the applied content slightly differently. Roughly two thirds of the course is pure.
A calculator is allowed throughout, and students are expected to use its statistical functions fluently. The statistics questions also assume familiarity with a large data set published by the board in advance.
Where students come unstuck
GCSE algebra that is accurate but slow. A-level assumes that manipulating expressions, surds, indices and quadratics costs no effort at all. If it still takes thought, every new topic is harder than it should be. This is the first thing we check.
Questions that do not name the method. A-level papers reward recognising which idea applies, and many questions combine two or three. Students who have learned topics as separate boxes struggle to connect them.
Proof and “show that”. Marks are for a complete, logical argument set out clearly. Students used to being marked on answers underwrite these.
Calculus and trigonometry in Year 13. The second year moves quickly through integration techniques, differential equations and trigonometric identities, and leans on a formula booklet students need to know their way around.
Mechanics without physics. Students not taking physics often find forces and modelling alien. It responds very well to careful diagrams and a consistent method.
Statistics as an afterthought. Hypothesis testing has a precise form of words that earns the marks. It is learnable in a few sessions and often left until too late.
How tutoring fits around school
In Year 12 the most useful work is usually consolidation: making sure each topic is properly understood before the class moves on, because the course builds on itself quickly. In Year 13 it shifts towards mixed practice and full papers, marked against the real mark scheme, with errors tracked so the same one is not made in June.

When a strong student stops feeling strong
Many A-level mathematicians have never found maths hard before. Getting 40 per cent on a first Year 12 test can be a real shock, and the common responses, avoidance or quiet panic, both make things worse. A tutor who recognises this early can stop a wobble becoming a dropped subject.

Questions parents ask
Which exam boards do you cover for A-level maths?
Edexcel, AQA and OCR. The pure content is almost identical across boards; the differences are in the applied papers and the style of question. Tell us the board at the consultation.
Is it too late to start in Year 13?
No, but the plan changes. We prioritise the Year 12 content that Year 13 topics depend on, then move to mixed exam practice. Starting in the autumn of Year 13 leaves comfortable time; starting after mocks means being selective about what will gain the most marks.
Do you tutor A-level statistics or the statistics in other subjects?
Yes. We tutor statistics as part of A-level maths and as a subject in its own right, and the same skills support students meeting statistics in economics, psychology, biology or geography.
