GCSE science tutors in London: biology, chemistry and physics

Science is the largest block of content at GCSE: three subjects, six exam papers, and a vocabulary of several hundred terms. Students rarely struggle with all of it. Usually one science, or one kind of question, is dragging the grade down, and the work is finding which.

Combined or triple
Combined science covers all three sciences and is worth two GCSEs, reported as a double grade such as 6-5, with papers in each of the three sciences.
Triple, or separate, science is three full GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics, each with two longer papers and extra content. It is the usual route for students aiming at science A-levels, though combined science does not close that door.
Both have Foundation and Higher tiers. Many London independent schools sit IGCSE sciences instead. The school chooses the route and the tier; we teach to whichever your child is on, and one tutor can cover one science or all three.
Where the marks are lost
Six-mark questions. Extended answers are marked on a logical sequence of points, not on how much is written. Students either freeze or write everything they know. A simple plan, then linked sentences, fixes both.
The maths. A substantial share of the marks is mathematical, rising from biology through chemistry to physics, where it is highest. Rearranging equations, units, standard form and graphs are where a good scientist with shaky maths loses a grade.
Required practicals. Students are examined on experiments they did, or watched, months earlier. Questions ask about variables, sources of error and improvements. These marks are predictable and widely dropped.
Imprecise language.Mark schemes want the exact term. “The particles move more” is not “the particles gain kinetic energy”.
Application questions. Higher papers put familiar ideas in unfamiliar settings. Students who have memorised without understanding are stuck at the first line.
Subject by subject
Biology has the most content and the most vocabulary. The work is organising it so it can be recalled, and practising the longer written answers.
Chemistry is where many students meet their first real wall: moles, quantitative chemistry and bonding. These are sequential, so a gap early on blocks everything after it.
Physics is the most mathematical. Students who are taught to choose the equation, rearrange it and track the units find that a large part of the paper becomes routine.
Finding the weak science first
Before lessons begin, your child completes the Infinite Learning Profile: exam-board-aligned questions that show what they know, and a short questionnaire on how they study, focus and remember. The tutor is briefed against it before the first lesson, and after every lesson writes a report to your Parent Dashboard: what was covered, what is secure, what is next.
When the volume is the problem
For many students the difficulty with science is not any one idea. It is the sheer amount, and the feeling of being behind in three subjects at once. Part of a tutor’s job is making the pile finite: a list of topics, an order, a weekly plan the student can actually follow.

Questions parents ask
Can one tutor cover biology, chemistry and physics?
Often, yes, particularly for combined science. For triple science at the top grades, or where one science is much weaker than the others, a specialist in that subject can be the better choice. We will recommend one or the other at the consultation.
Which exam boards do you cover?
AQA, Edexcel and OCR GCSE, and the Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSEs that many London independent schools sit. Tell us the board and whether your child is on combined or triple science.
Should my child take triple science?
That is a decision for you and the school. Triple is more content in the same two years, which suits a student who enjoys science and is coping well elsewhere. A tutor can tell you honestly how your child is managing the current workload, which is useful when you discuss it with school.
